Alethea Maguire-Cruz Questioning ‘Placehood’

In my experience, multiple excursions into remote landscapes, that are sparsely dissimilar from each other, have inspired attempts to uncover perceived and felt connections between land, sea and sky as one living thing. In search of ‘placehood,’ the collisions of shared elements that can be seen as nature repeating itself, translate into a rendered meeting point of diversified terrain: edge vs. atmosphere: an energetic ‘event horizon’. By increasingly altering my point of reference or orientation, unique spaces begin to collapse into one another: a composite memory or ‘singularity’ of making ‘sense’. For me, the transient enigma of place lies within the paroxysm between loci and event. I find juxtaposing, layering or combining the sequential narratives of a recorded journey to be that event. Only through the limitlessness of place within the landscape have I been able to distill a cohesive earthbound understanding of an observed reality.
